One-Time Offer

If anyone has an extra ticket or two for the U2 concert on Friday or Saturday night at the Pond, I'd be willing to use it. Seriously, I'm even willing to stay out late on Saturday night, which is a rare sacrifice on my part. And if you are going to the concert this weekend, will you do me a favor? Invite Bono to join you at Village Presbyterian Church in Ladera Ranch on Sunday. 10 o'clock in the morning isn't too early after a late night concert (maybe it depends on how many encores they do). He could even play the song "Yahweh" if he felt like it, or not. I can be very flexible.

Joe

On Sunday, we kick off a new series titled, "Destiny of a Dreamer: the Story of Joseph." I've been reading through the story over the past couple of days and it's amazing (see Genesis 37-50). Too often we think of the Bible as a set of propositional truths, but the majority of it is actually story. I love to hear a good story and, maybe you've noticed, I also enjoy telling good stories. I hope the story of Joseph will help us to think about the destiny God has for each of us and for the church.

Does anyone know of any other "Joseph" resources that might help as I prepare for this series? I picked up a DVD copy of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." I'm not much of a Donny Osmond fan, but he's awesome in this role. Is this the limit on Joe? Let me know if you have any other resources. Thanks!

Easter Celebration 2005

Easter_2005Yesterday we had a glorious Easter celebration at Village Presbyterian Church. Thanks to all who helped to create a welcoming space for the whole community. Thanks to our musicians, especially Chris Koch, for using your talents to the glory of God. Thanks to Kevin and Jennifer Tonai for preparing a feast before and after the service. Thanks to our set-up and take-down teams. Thanks to Lindsay and Laurie for creating a festive atmosphere. Thanks to our teachers and nursery workers. Together we made this an Easter to remember.

And the best news of all is the Easter proclaimation: Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed!

And so too, the week after Easter marks the one year anniversary in my journey as a blogger (the actual date is April 14th but I'd rather think of things as Easter to Easter; part of our family tradition is to take a picture each year on Easter Sunday...oh, how we've grown!)

Good Friday

Tomorrow we're gathering at 6 p.m. under the gazebo on the Town Green for a cooperative service with Pathway Church in Ladera Ranch. The focus of the service will be readings from Mark 14-15. Chris Koch will be leading us in song and various readers from Pathway and Village will help us to hear the story. As I said last Sunday, to fully appreciate the good news of Easter, we must fully face the crisis of Good Friday. I encourage all to make it a priority to attend a Good Friday service.

Enjoying the Ride...

So maybe you've noticed that I've been flakey about posting in recent days (and weeks). Things are a bit hectic in this season as we prepare for Easter and so I've just been more focused on completing my things to do list. On the other hand, this is also a season I really love for lots of reasons. I love Easter because it is the celebration of the power of Christ's resurrection and the defeat of the dark forces of this world. Second, I love this season because the sun is up earlier, which helps me to get up earlier. Early morning is my favorite time of day. Third, our kids are energetic and having lots of fun these days. This morning we held sign-ups for the Ladera Liquids Swim Team and I'm eager for the season to begin. Fourth, I've got another birthday coming next month and I really don't mind getting older. Hopefully, I'm growing in wisdom because I've noticed that my knees creak more these days. And fifth, I getting better about not getting caught up in the stress of this season. I really am enjoying the ride.

There's a break in the rain and so I'm heading outside to throw a ball with my sons. I know it's going to be more fun that sitting in front of this computer so end of post....

Mission Yearbook

Our work in Ladera Ranch is featured today in the 2005 Mission Yearbook. You can find the entry on the web by clicking here. It's so cool to have faithful Presbyterians around the world praying for us even as they pray specifically for the Presbytery of Los Ranchos. Thanks for your prayers!

Village Connection Notebook

There are a few things we do on Sunday morning in worship that are purely practical. For example, each week during the announcements, we ask everyone to fill out a "Village Connection Notebook." Now if you're a regular with us, you can be sure that your information is already on file (and carefully protected) but, even so, let me encourage you to fill out the notebook anyway. You just might be sitting in a row with someone who is with us for the first time and if you include only your first name, then chances are the person next to you will do the same. I always encourage our "regulars" to fill in all the blanks as an example to others. At this stage in our life together, it's virtually impossible to worship anonymously with us and I think that's a good thing.

Now, I also want to acknowledge a few creative people among us who regularly add humor to the "comment" line. Maybe you wonder if I really read what you write each week. I do and your comments often make me smile. One family in particular, who shall remain nameless (and who was NOT with us this past Sunday), always includes a funny comment or question. But some of the best comments have come from children. On Easter Sunday last year, one child wrote: "I like this church." That's an amazing affirmation. We work hard to make Village Presbyterian Church a place where children learn and have fun learning! This past Sunday, I was smiling all afternoon because I found these words written in child's beautiful script. Answering the question, "How did you hear about us?" she wrote, "my mom came to tell me." And in the comment line she wrote, "I think you guys are really good." Indeed, faith is passed from one generation to the next. It's always encouraging whenever I can see evidence that it's really happening (Psalm 145:4). I'll keep you posted if I come across any more gems in the weeks ahead.

Surf's Up!

Check out my sons on the webpage for Cola's Surf Camp. You'll see Andy on the bottom left corner of the home page and Matthew shows up in the video. See if you can find him (hint, it's not a crowd shot but he's the one riding the wave just after the "shark-jaws" shot).

A Learning Party (2)

JoelrobertsSomeone asked me at breakfast this morning what I've enjoyed most about this conference and I told him the best part is getting to know people from different places. Last night I had dinner with my friend, Joel Roberts.  Joel is the Executive Director of PATH and the author of the book, How to Increase Homelessness: Real Solutions to the Absurdity of Homelessness in America. We had a wonderful time at dinner because we were joined by his son, Justin and his daughter, Grace. I love to watch Joel interact with his kids; he's a good dad!

This picture (me, Andy and Joel) was taken last month when our family took a tour of PATH. They are doing amazing things in response to the crisis of homelessness (I'm sure you realize the title of his book is purely ironic). Now as much as I love Ladera Ranch, I also love to be in different places and meet different people (there many different people here in Venice Beach...wish I brought my camera). I really don't want to live an insulated life. As a people belonging to God, we are called to engage the world around us. Last night Joel and I talked about what the church does for others and Joel said he mostly sees the church doing only for themselves. Joel was a tremendous help to my spiritual formation during my high school and college years and so his words still carry great weight for me today. His statement made me think: What does the church do for others? What do we do for others that don't expect to receive in return? What do we do beyond maintaining the structure of the church? I don't really have an answer today but it's something to think about.

A Learning Party

I'll be spending the next couple of days in West L.A. attending a "Learning Party" sponsored by The Ooze. I would have done much better in high school if the whole "learning party" thing had been around a long time ago. I hope to keep you in touch over the next few days.
